What is Babbitt?
![]()
The babbitt layer is a soft, sacrificial metal alloy applied to the working surface of a hydrodynamic bearing. Its purpose is to protect critical components by embedding small contaminants and preventing shaft or thrust runner damage. Tin-based babbitt alloys are most common, though Kingsbury can apply a wide range of materials, including lead-based alloys and select high-temperature polymers, depending on the application.
When to Consider Rebabbitting
Visible wear or damage on the babbitt surface often signals underlying issues in the lubrication or mechanical system. Indicators include:
-
Burned or blistered babbitt surfaces
-
Pitting or erosion patterns
-
Discoloration or plating from degraded lubricants
-
Embedded debris or scoring
If you observe any of these symptoms, contact a Kingsbury engineer. Our specialists can assess whether the bearing requires professional rebabbitting or if the condition points to a system-level issue such as misalignment, contamination, or lubrication failure.
The Kingsbury Difference
As the industry leader in turbine bearing manufacturing and service, Kingsbury provides complete rebabbitting and bearing restoration solutions, including:
-
Babbitt removal and re-casting using precision centrifugal or static methods
-
Machining and scraping to restore design clearances and hydrodynamic geometry
-
Ultrasonic and dye-penetrant inspection for bond integrity
-
Dimensional inspection and balancing for large components
-
Material verification and certification for all repaired surfaces
Each bearing is returned to OEM tolerances, tested, and documented to meet Kingsbury’s rigorous performance standards.
